Talent Management Survey

By Sharan Gohel

Continuing with our ongoing focus on Talent in the last few e bulletins this month we would like to draw some attention to some current research studies and surveys conducted within this field. Most of these surveys conducted are conducted on talent management are focused on the current state of the talent management in business today. One of which is the ‘Nurturing Talent’ - A research report from Cranfield Business School and Learn Direct.

The report brings together a number of information sources: prior literature, discussion among the research team, and an online survey with training and recruiting decision makers 1189 took part on the survey from different industry sectors. The report presents both sides of the talent management coin- do we ‘buy’ talent or do we ‘make’ it. Research points in the direction of the development of employees as having greater benefit on organization than external recruitment – 78% verses 22% respectively.

It appears through not just this research, is the driver to recruiting externally is to bring new skills and attitudes to the organization (44%). As 38% reported they felt the most cost effective solution is to recruit internally. Additional benefits of taking a look at your internal resources include an increase in staff morale, motivation and above all retention. In the research report more than half who responded felt using internal development helped them to retain talent (52%), and 33% reported they used internal recruitment as a way to motivate.

Engaging in ongoing staff development is an important part for the growth of your business, especially when times are tough as the advantages of nurturing staff are clearly even more evident. The need for new skills and attitudes is always going to be vital for any organization, especially in the current economic climate where change will be inevitable. In this context the question is how do you recruit someone with talent as well as the current skillet for your business?

Most people tend to focus on the negative aspects of the economic turmoil, rather than the possibilities and opportunities. The current climate not only mean increased competition and challenge for delivering services , but also means there will be competition for talent. The challenge for businesses to day is getting the having the right skillet to drive forward their business strategy – moving towards a more Integrated talent management approach.
