The Energy Industry and Recruitment

Following last months article on the debate over the recruitment industry and methods of robust recruitment, further research into one of our client group’s sector has revealed that new opportunities in the utilities and energy industry are presenting real recruitment issues…

Reports in The Engineer Online (http://www.theengineer.co.uk/liChannelID/179/Articles/298761/Powerful+opportunities.htm ) have commented that a number of energy companies are conducting recruitment campaigns to resource new initiatives, fuelled by renewed government interest in the industry.  However there is concern over a lack of experienced and suitably qualified people to fill the new posts being created, in an industry where a staffing gap already exists. In addition to recruitment challenges, the retention of skilled employees is an issue with the ‘top layers’ due to retire and a reported shortage of people in their 30’s and 40’s with the appropriate skills.

In order to optimise opportunities within the industry, companies need to tackle the issue of recruiting and retaining talented staff in an increasingly competitive employment market. As the website also reported: ‘In the short, medium and long term, the future for careers in the sector is looking very bright…. there really are some fantastic opportunities.'

Employing and retaining ‘talented’ staff seems an obvious thing to do given the current recruitment climate. However we understand that it is not as simple as it sounds. QED Consulting adds value through adopting an external and objective perspective on our client’s businesses and assisting them with the development and implementation of effective Talent Management models that take into account the context, resources and culture of their organisations.
