Boring Board Meetings (part 2)

In Part 1 of this article, ‘Boring Board Meetings?’ we looked at the benefits of holding regular, formal board meetings.

First, the law places a wide ‘fiduciary’ duty of care on Directors to safeguard both their company’s and their shareholders’ interests – and indeed also those of their employees, creditors and customers wherever there is a contractual relationship. Meeting formally as a Board is one way of ensuring such duties are considered and reviewed regularly and professionally.

Negotiation in the NHS

The task of commissioning services throughout the UK health-care supply chain is becoming increasingly challenging. There are some very large sums of money at stake. Even a contract with a small District General Hospital worth may be worth at least £100 million in a year. And whereas the areas for contract negotiation were historically quite peripheral, they are now very significant.

Those responsible for commissioning, especially managers with previous commercial experience of negotiating, know that there can be rich prizes to be gained for their organisations through professional bargaining. Many others however are finding that the skills now required of them are new and even quite alien.

Successful Sub Regional Partnerships

QED Consulting's first event of 2008, which was hosted in partnership with Doncaster Business School, ‘An Evening with Simon Hill: Strategic Business Improvement’ was an evening not to be missed. Over 60 business colleagues gathered in the Stables at High Melton on a cold winter evening to hear a fascinating talk by Simon Hill, (Director for Business at Yorkshire Forward) about strategic business improvement and how Yorkshire is performing against the other Regional Development Agency areas. Before the networking in the bar began to flow, Simon was joined by Rowland Foote (recently appointed Doncaster College Principal) and Steve Hinton (Executive Chairman of QED Consulting) for a stimulating and challenging question and answer session.

We are proud and excited to announce that the evening marked the inaugural annual ‘QED Consulting & Doncaster Business School: An evening with....’ event. Next January we will be inviting you all to our second event in partnership with Doncaster Business School… watch this space! QED Consulting would also like to take this opportunity to thank Simon for his time and for sharing his expertise with us all and to the Business School for being such wonderful hosts.

Back due to popular demand…

Over the course of 2007 QED Consulting hosted a programme of successful and effective seminars and networking lunches. In response to positive delegate feedback and requests for specific business topics, we are proud to announce the first seminar of 2008 on Time Management….

We all know that we need to do it, and often know how to, but due to work and home life pressures regularly fail to manage our time effectively. Our Time Management seminar will give you practical tools and tips in order to help keep those simple promises that we often find ourselves making and breaking… being home on time, not working over the weekend or worrying about work at home!

The seminar will be held at our Doncaster offices, 12.00 Thursday 28th February. We look forward to welcoming you all. If you would like to attend or find out more about our seminars please contact Rebecca Hughes on 01302 767896.

QAS: ‘Good Customer Service’

Quantum Assessment Services (QAS), sister company of QED Consulting hosted a ‘Good Customer Service’ seminar and networking lunch, on the 24th January. The session was very interactive and both QAS and QED Consulting would like to thank Duncan Meredith (guest speaker), Russell Turner and Leanne Stephenson from Garbutt & Elliot for their support.

QAS, the original assessment body working with Customer First UK, are keen to raise awareness of the ‘Putting the Customer First ®’ standard. QAS plan to repeat this seminar monthly, in different locations throughout the UK throughout 2008.

The next seminar is planned for the 21st February in our Doncaster offices when we will be joined by Howard Richardson and Vicky Fryer from Naylor Wintersgill.

If you would be interested to find out more about either QAS, Customer First or our seminars please contact Rebecca Hughes on 01302 767896 or log onto www.qasonline.co.uk
