Welcome to September’s edition of QED Consulting’s E bulletin.

With the classroom doors re-opening many parents with young children can look forward to less tiring days back at work whilst those with older children may be thinking about university fees! In the natural order of things there is also another generation of school leavers and graduates about to enter the world of work and so in this month’s E bulletin we explore some of the related issues;

  • Selection and Educational Recruitment; thought provoking comments on the student selection process.
  • Psychometrics – recently there has been much debate in the media and within professional circles regarding the value of psychometric tools in the recruitment process.
  • People in organisations - should we develop our organisation around our people or people around the organisation?
  • QED Consulting top tips for effective recruitment.

This E bulletin will take just a few minutes of your time and we promise you it will be time well spent and really enjoyable too!

Let’s play mind games” recently published in the Sunday Times will have read an attempt by a journalist to present a ‘balanced’ view on Psychometrics. As an Occupational Psychologist for whom these tests are a useful and valid support to my work with clients, I would like to counter the somewhat cynical attitude of the journalist which is unfortunately fairly representative of many people’s views on the use of Psychometric testing in selection and development. So here is a Psychologist’s eye view of the issue…

People in Organisations: The Chicken or the Egg?

Jeremy Thorn, President of QED Consulting and experienced Non-Executive Director of a wide range of businesses, asks if jobs should be matched to the individuals available, or should individuals be matched to the jobs? His suggested answer raises six more questions – and a clear way forward.

Top Tips – Effective Recruitment

  1. Decide if you really need to recruit. Alternatives might be internal promotion, sub-contracting, interim-management, job reorganisation or restructuring.
  2. Write a clear Job Description. This should include a Job Title, to whom this post will report and who in turn might report to this post (by job titles rather than name), the overall scope of the job, primary detailed tasks that will be measured in performance, and add: ‘any other duties that might reasonably be required’
